Record a clear voiceover

Gareth Casey Updated by Gareth Casey

If you're using Flashback Express 7 to create screen recordings with voiceovers, capturing clear, high-quality microphone audio is key—especially if you plan to use the voice changer to replace your original recording with an A.I. voiceover.

Here are some simple tips to help you get the best audio quality:

1. Use a Good Microphone

Built-in laptop or webcam microphones often pick up a lot of background noise and produce muffled sound. Investing in a dedicated USB microphone or a good quality headset can make a huge difference. These mics are designed to capture voice more clearly, reduce environmental noise, and deliver a fuller, more natural tone

Tip: If your mic has settings (like gain or pattern selection), choose the cardioid pattern and set the gain to a moderate level to avoid distortion.

2. Reduce Background Noise

Clear audio starts with a quiet environment. Background noise such as fans, traffic, people talking, or even your computer’s hum can all get picked up by your mic.

  • Choose a quiet room and record when it’s least likely to be noisy.
  • Turn off air conditioning, fans, and notifications on your devices.
  • Consider recording at night or early morning if ambient noise is lower.
  • You can also place soft items like cushions or blankets around your space to reduce echo and noise.

Tip: Also, check that you have the Noise Cancellation option enabled on the Webcam & Audio tab of Flashback Express's Settings.

3. Use Headphones to Prevent Echo

If you're playing music, game sounds, or video during your recording, always use headphones. If you listen to the sound through speakers instead, your microphone may pickup that audio, as well s your voice, which can create an echo or feedback loop in the final recording.

  • Use closed-back headphones for better sound isolation.
  • Make sure they’re comfortable so you can focus on your voice delivery.

Echo and feedback not only degrade the audio quality but can also interfere with AI voice processing, resulting in inconsistent or unnatural-sounding voiceovers.

4. Speak Clearly and at a Steady Volume

Speak as if you're presenting to an audience—clearly, confidently, and with natural energy. Avoid whispering, mumbling, or rapid speech. Pause slightly between thoughts, and keep your mouth the same distance from the mic throughout the recording.

Consistent speech helps the voice changer maintain the tone and emotion of your original delivery because it uses your voice inflections, pacing, and tone as a model. Clear delivery ensures the generated voice carries your intended emotion and emphasis.

Tip: Avoid turning your head while speaking and try to stay a constant distance from the the mic
